LUNA in Lake Charles on October 9

We headed back out to Luna in Lake Charles. Always a pleasure out there. We used to have a tradition of listening to a King Crimson cd on the way to a show if we were travelling on I-10 East. I decided to bring back the tradition, and we listened to "In the Court of King Crimson" on the way to the show. Not sure how familiar you all are with King Crimson, but they play "prog" (i.e. progressive) rock, and have some complex songs. My experience/opinion regarding a King Crimson cd is that the first song is absolutely bad ass, really loud and rocking, and then the rest of the songs on the album are kind of quiet and not nearly as good as the first song. However, each time you listen to the cd in its entirety, the other "non-first" songs, get slightly better with each successive play. We (Plump) always talk about this and laugh and laugh (because we are idiots). When you are travelling and you do the same route again and again, you will sometimes have the same conversations each time. (And it's funner and funnier than it sounds).

Enough of this.

Back to October 9. So, there was actually a very decent crowd there to watch us play our first set. Then they were mostly gone by the end of the show. Many of those people were inside watching a duo of kids singing duo acoustic songs--some joey songs in the vein of Tenacious D, and some in the vein of Red Hot Chili Pepper songs. Dad gum it. The crowd had been the duo and their friends. Aha.

It is always nice at Luna. Gig (soundman) always treats us right. We had plenty of Miller High Life.

We started to drive back and soon found ourselves at the "Skillet" truck stop (this is a Petrol truckstop) in Beaumont at 2 am. As Josh, Jason, and myself were leaving, we were approached, directly outside the Skillet, by a gentleman of 25 who was carrying a glass of courvoisier. He informed us that he was from the "hood". But that he was also really from "Florida". He told us stories about how he loved "eating pussy" and "fuckin" and that he liked to do this type of thing over and over and over again. The guy was enjoyable but he was very big and very drunk and sometimes a bit of a "close talker", so the 3 of us were all of a mind not to anger him. He told us how he wasn't afraid of "getting hit in the face" or "getting his ass kicked", and told us a very specific story about one particular time when he was at a party in the "hood" where he didn't know anyone. It seems that someone at the party (not a "friend") approached our narrator and talked "smack" directly to his face. Then the fellow (not the narrator) punched the narrator in the face 4-5 times. The narrarator told us (with no small amount of pride) about how he may have gone down, but he did not go out. Apparently, he can take plenty of punches. He did manage to get out of the party and to safety after being punched 4-5 times. We were all impressed. Then, the narrator went back to talking about how he loved "eating pussy" and "fucking" and that he liked to do this type of thing over and over again. This one-sided conversation had been going on for about 10 minutes. I don't remember him sipping from his glass of courvoisier, but he might have. Then, two women could be seen entering the truck stop. True to his narration, this guy stopped in mid-sentence, and was giving them the "big eye". He offered them a greeting, but the women didn't respond. He started following them in. We took this as a cue to go back to the car. He saw us leaving and said, "Come-on, you guys got to come help me out with these two". We politely declined and headed back to Houston. Sadly, I doubt we will ever see that guy again. I hope he got those two.
